Counterproductive environmental policies: Long term versus short term substitution effects of gas in a liberalised electricity market
نویسنده
چکیده
1 Abstract In Norway, the environmental impact of building gas power in a liberalised market has been the main controversy for over a decade. Proponents of natural gas argue natural gas substitute more dirty sources of electricity generation within the Nordic market, while opponents argue there is no such guarantee and choose to focus on domestic emissions. Despite several efforts, energy models have failed in resolving this controversy satisfactory. A survey of previous studies using present energy models (EMPS and NORDMODT) for decision support is presented. The models have been re-run and their sensitivity towards specification assumptions examined. Second part presents a system dynamics model particularly designed to address the shortand long run impacts of energy policies. Results show that gas power will substitute some coal in the short term (as argued by the gas proponents), but that the substitution effect is modest. When including long-term substitutional effects of new investments, gas power also substitute future investments in renewables which results in a net increase in CO2emissions in the long run. These findings raise serious questions about the environmental benefit of the fuel substitution strategy.

Economic Factors affecting demand for gas in Iran
In this study the autoregressive distributed lag model and error correction model to estimate Hazard function is used during the years 1377-1394. The results show that in the short term and long term there is substitution between electricity and natural gas in the domestic sector. But the price elasticity of demand relative to the price of electricity is less than 5.0, this result indicates tha...
متن کاملTransition in Iran’s Electricity Market Considering the Policies on Elimination of Electricity Subsidies: System Dynamics Application
Because of electricity subsidies, electricity price in Iran is much lower than its real value, and the growth of electricity demand is much more than its rational rate, which in turn implies ever increasing investment in the electricity section by the Government. Therefore, the recent Government policies are based on elimination of electricity subsidies, followed by commissioning complete elect...

متن کاملEstimate of Armington substitution elasticity for fishery products in Iran
The price transmission from the international market to the domestic market of tunas was investigated in the present research. For this purpose, the elasticity of substitution between tuna imports with goods produced in Iran (Armington Elasticity) was calculated. Armington elasticity reflects a degree of substitution between commodities produced domestically and those produced abroad. A greater...
متن کاملApplication of a New Hybrid Method for Day-Ahead Energy Price Forecasting in Iranian Electricity Market
Abstract- In a typical competitive electricity market, a large number of short-term and long-term contracts are set on basis of energy price by an Independent System Operator (ISO). Under such circumstances, accurate electricity price forecasting can play a significant role in improving the more reasonable bidding strategies adopted by the electricity market participants. So, they cannot only r...
